Facts:

• On average, 87% of the high school students in Metro Boston graduated on time in 2010.
• In 2010, only 4.51% of students at all grade levels reported dropping out.
• The average graduation rate increased to 90.2% in 2015 and the average drop-out rate decreased to 4.33%.
• Having a high graduation rate and low drop-out rate is associated with positive educational opportunities.

Graduation rate: Percentage of students who graduated from high school on time (4-year cohort graduation rate); Dropout rate: percentage of students who dropped out from high school (including 9th to 12th grade)

Footnote: We use an adjusted 4th grade graduation rate here. From the beginning of the 9th grade, students who are entering that grade for the first time from a cohort that is “adjusted” by adding any students who subsequently transfer into the cohort and subtracting any students who subsequently transfer out, emigrate to another country, or die, resulting in the fourth year in a net, adjusted cohort. For drop out, we included students who dropped out at any grade.
